Aquarium Science

Creatures beings held in aquaria have always played a role in the natural sciences. This is true of the oxygen research by Priestley Aquarium Scienceusing aquatic plants in the eighteenth century, of the observations by Konrad Lorenz on territorial behavior by the example of the stickleback in the early twentieth century, and of the investigations today on the effects of pollutants dissolved in water.

Aquatics also include those imported animal and plant species which have not yet been scientifically described. For some fish families, in which the number of newly discovered species exceeds the rate at which they are arranged, aquarium code systems are used. For example, not yet classified armor-catfish are identified with L-numbers.

The reaction of commercial interests in relation to aquatic research is also visible on a completely different family level: Scientific studies in living conducted on the freshwater shrimp focused a few years ago on farming shrimp for human consumption in shrimp farms. Since then, this research has extended to numerous other shrimp species, and there is a demand for aquariums for durable species.
